Architecture and the Poetic Gaze
Criticism, politics, prose and intermittent poetry.
Architecture and the Poetic Gaze, and the above subtitle, Criticism, politics, prose and intermittent poetry, indicate the importance of a poetic gaze that is simultaneously creative. A poetic gaze that is, in many respects, transversal, moving between different manners of speaking, drawing, and writing; across various creative domains; and across life-worlds: a gaze that creates and dismantles architecture through criticism, politics, prose, and poetry.
The poetic gaze does not simply privilege that—still for many—illusory pinnacle of architectural excellence embodied in the completed architectural object. Writing, political engagement, critical prose, and the voice and voices of poetry are all intertwined with architecture. This is what my Substack will be about. It is incorrect to treat these other forms of architectural practice as invisible. Different modes of creative practice have always been inscribed into the architectural canon.
Given the precarious and lottery-like nature of the profession, it could be asserted that architects need to express the poetic through different media as well as architecture. These desires gesture toward architectural inclusiveness and transversality — toward a expanded architectural field, a poetics that might dismantle and question architectural discourse.
